The sense of smell is actually a force that has been neglected in the human senses. Researchers from the University of Manchester have discovered a synthetic compound that mimics the smell of sandalwood, which can promote human scalp tissue in the laboratory to maintain hair growth. The principle is that this chemical substance can act by triggering odor receptors in hair follicles, thereby reducing cell mortality and promoting the production of growth factors.

One of the authors of the article, Ralf Paus of the University of Manchester, said, “This is actually quite a surprising discovery. It is the first time in history that the remodeling of normal human mini-organs (hair) can be achieved through a simple, Widely used odor to regulate."

Paus and his colleagues adjusted the receptor OR2AT4. Previously, scientists discovered that this receptor exists in human skin and when exposed to sandalwood compounds during wound healing, it can stimulate the growth of cells called keratinocytes. Grow.

"Considering the close connection between hair growth and wound healing," the researchers explained in their latest report, they decided to apply this chemical to the human scalp, which is taken from the human body.

After six days in the laboratory, compared with untreated tissue, hair follicles treated with this compound not only died more slowly—to prevent hair loss, but they also produced more growth factors. Paus's team believes that OR2AT4 is the key, because blocking it will inhibit hair growth.
